An archive is an administrative entity responsible for the custody, document processing and safekeeping of collections under its jurisdiction. An archival document is one that a given organization – whether an individual or a legal entity – produces in the exercise of its functions and activities. This production may involve both the preparation of the document by the organization itself, as well as the reception and safekeeping of other documents, and may encompass both the public and private spheres.
Creation
The initiative to propose the implementation of the Faculty of Education Sector Archive (ASFE) came from a technical meeting promoted by the Central Archive/SIARQ, with all the Technical Assistants of Management, in December 1999, when the need for the implementation of Sector Archives in all Units was presented, to comply with Deliberation CONSU-A-8/95. [Resolution CONSU-A-039/1989, of 20/12/1989 – Provides for the Creation of the Archives System Coordination as a complementary body of the University, extinguishing the UNICAMP Information and Cultural Diffusion Center]
At this meeting, the need was presented for each unit to create its sectoral archive and implement the Temporality Table, later published in the State Official Gazette, which guides all the work of these archives.
On that occasion, with the consent of the FE Management, assistance was requested from the Unicamp Central Archive and a working group was created to develop surveys in existing archives at the Faculty.
SIARQ's support involves, in addition to the legal installation procedures provided for in CONSU Deliberations, visits by technicians from the Central Archive, as well as joint participation by both parties in the development of the work in general.
The archive, in its first documentary survey, has documents from 1965, characterizing a historical aspect, in addition to the administrative one, because it reflects the creation and development of the Faculty of Education within the University and its impact on a broader society. It also reflects its educational character, which is the fundamental basis of this Faculty in all its activities, be they academic, teaching, research or functional, in addition to being appropriate to present substantial documentary support to the target audience.
The Faculty of Education has been investing in recent years in research on Memory of Education through the following Research Groups: GEPEMEMO – Memory Research Group – History and Education; HISTEDBR – Study and Research Group on History, Society and Education in Brazil; CEMPEM – Study Circle on Memory and Research in Mathematical Education; FORMAR – Study and Research Group on Teacher Training in the Area of Sciences; GEPEC – Study and Research Group on Continuing Education and GPDISC – Study and Research Group on Education and Socio-cultural Differentiation.
In 2000, we recorded two moments in the history of the archive. The first, demonstrating the state of the documents that were accumulated, which in reality characterized an inactive deposit, a “dead archive”. The second moment, already concerns the conquest of a new physical space where these same documents were arranged, enabling the completion of the 1st phase of the work (document mapping).
