I'm a fool for wanting you
Author Camila Sosa Villada
Publishing house yourquets (Year: 2022 | Pages: 208)
Online meeting: 30/7/2025, Wed, 4:17 p.m.
Note: the link of the Meet will be forwarded to registered members from the Readers Club
Synopsis:
The collection of short stories 'I'm a fool for wanting you', by the Argentine author Camila Sosa Villada, moves between literary genres, mixing humor and speculative fiction.
In this work, the revolutionary and talented writer creates an original narrative that moves between biographical accounts and fiction with touches of fantasy. Set against the backdrop of the transvestite universe, the nine short stories that make up the work tell stories and narratives of extravagant and deeply human characters, who face a nefarious reality in ways as strange as they themselves, with experiences marked by violence, but also by joy, lust and dreams.
Possessing a dazzling and daring imagination, Camila Sosa Villada is capable of both assuming the voice of a victim of the Mexican Inquisition and of building a dystopian universe in which her transvestite existence has become her strongest revenge. With her unique style, she plays with the boundaries between magic and reality, honoring the oral tradition of Latin American literature with unparalleled ease and solidity.
In the tough years of the 1990s, a woman earns her living as a girlfriend for hire for gay men. In a drug den in Harlem, a transvestite has an unusual encounter with none other than Billie Holiday. A group of rugby players try to haggle over the price of a night of sex and get what they deserve back. Nuns, grandmothers, children and dogs are never what they seem…

The old and the sea
Author Ernest Hemingway
Publishing house Bertrand Brazil (Year: 2013 | Pages: 126)
Synopsis:
In the consecrated and timeless work The old and the sea, Ernest Hemingway narrates the journey of Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman who has not caught a fish for 84 days. Considered by many to be an unlucky man, he decides to prove his worth — to others and to himself — and sets out alone in his small boat towards the high seas, determined to catch a large swordfish. Confident that this time he will succeed in his trade, he faces the challenge with courage and hope.
Without the company of his faithful assistant — a young man who admires him deeply — Santiago heads out to sea alone, surrounded by the vastness of crystal-clear waters and marine life. It is in this setting that he catches an extraordinary fish: one that promises to change his story. The narrative follows the epic struggle between man and animal, a battle that lasts for three days and three nights. Facing countless adversities, Santiago does not give up, guided by his willpower and unwavering faith.
This is the story of a man with calloused hands and hardened by life, who faces loneliness and relies on his dreams, thoughts and survival instinct. His belief in life and the dignity of human effort is what really matters. With an engaging plot that keeps the reader engaged from beginning to end, Hemingway delivers one of the most impactful works of modern literature — a profound account of human persistence, overcoming one's own limits and the lessons learned even from defeat.
Published in 1952, The old and the sea earned Hemingway the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was decisive in his receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. Alongside names such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and John Steinbeck, Hemingway established himself as one of the greatest figures of the so-called “Lost Generation”, leaving a legacy that continues to influence generations of American writers.

Pure
Author: Nara Vidal
Publishing house However (Year: 2024 | Pages: 96)
Synopsis:
How far can the cruelty that spans generations go in a village in the early 1930s in Minas Gerais? Here, Nara Vidal explores tough themes with the maturity of someone who is accustomed to weaving stories in different genres, without being afraid to put her characters' most challenging actions and thoughts on paper. If, at some point, we believe we have guessed the direction the story is taking, the author quickly presents us with more elements and reveals a universe that we would like to believe has few parallels with current events.

A daughter's love
Author: Hanaide Kalaigian
Publishing house Authentic Contemporary (Year: 2023 | Pages: 144)
Synopsis:
A descendant of Armenians, Meliné fulfilled all the ancestral expectations placed on her: she married Zohrab, took care of the house and her daughter Aline, honored and attended family, events, and practices.
One day, a news story invades her world with the frequency of an earthquake. Unable to cope with the change, Meliné delves into her origins, seeking refuge in the memories and particularities of Armenian culture – customs, a language of its own, typical dishes – and in the voices of women, all like her.
In this process, one experiences the delicate tension between submitting to or freeing oneself from a tradition that oppresses, but also welcomes; that ties, but also caresses; that protects, but also limits.
In 'A Daughter's Love', Meliné shares the leading role with the saga of her family and the traditions of the Armenian community. Thus, she opens up space for us to think about the relationship between mother and daughter and the female condition. All this from a point of view that has so far been little explored in Brazilian literature.
