How to prepare a TCC

1. Introduction

The primary objective in requiring a standard for the presentation of TCC (Course Completion Work) is to disseminate the technical data obtained and analyzed and to record them permanently, providing other researchers with reliable research sources capable of guiding future research work, facilitating its retrieval in the various information systems used at UNICAMP. In this sense, the Library of the Faculty of Education presents a proposal for standardization of course completion works for the Pedagogy course.

2. Methodology

The methodology adopted in the formulation of the TCC, that is, its structuring, was based on other bibliographies of experts in the area of Scientific Work Methodology, following the standards of ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards).

3. TCC Structure

Every work must have a beginning, middle and end, that is, introduction, development and conclusion. Below we present this composition in more detail, which may be composed of the following parts:

Discrimination of parties

3.1.1 Cover

It should contain the author's name at the top of the page, the title of the work in the center and, at the bottom, the name of the city and the year of presentation. Everything should be typed or typed in capital letters without underlining or using quotation marks and centered on the page.

3.1.2 Title page

It comes immediately after the cover page and contains the author's full name; in the center of the page, the title of the work developed; and just below, halfway down the page to the right, there is a brief, clearer explanation of the institutional objectives, followed by the institution for which the research is intended. At the bottom, the name of the city and the year are written. Here, only the initials are capitalized and not all the words as on the cover page.

3.1.3 Approval sheet

It must contain the date of approval, full names of the members of the examining board and a place for the members' signatures.

3.1.4 Preliminary pages

Pages preceding the summary. The following parts may be included, each on a separate page.

  • Dedication: This sheet is not mandatory, but contains text, usually short, in which the author dedicates his work to someone.
  • Thanks: This sheet is not mandatory, and aims to thank people who have contributed to the success of the work, pay tribute to people who were not directly related to its completion, and loved ones.
  • Epigraph: it is a thought from another author and that preferably, but not necessarily, has some relation to the theme.
  • Summary: “Written by the author of the TCC, the summary – a summary of the relevant points of the text, in clear, concise, direct language, with a maximum of 500 words.” (France, 1996).

3.1.5 Lists

List of illustrative or explanatory elements. The following lists may be included:

  • Lists of illustrations: list of tables, graphs, formulas, slides, figures (drawings, engravings, maps, photographs), in the same order in which they are cited in the TCC, indicating the page where they are located.
  • Lists of abbreviations and acronyms: alphabetical list of abbreviations and acronyms used in the publication, followed by the corresponding words written in full.
  • Notation lists: list of conventional signs used in the text, followed by their respective meanings.

3.1.6 Summary

This is where the divisions of the work, the chapters and sections appear, with the indication of the pages where each of them begins. It should not be confused with the index, to designate this part. If there is more than one volume, a complete summary of the work should be included in each volume.

3.1.7 Text

Like all scientific works, the organization of the TCC text must follow the sequence: Introduction, Development and Conclusion, dividing the chapters according to the nature of the subject.

3.1.8 Bibliographic references

This is a list, in alphabetical order and sequentially numbered, of the publications used to prepare the work, which may or may not be numbered. If you wish to indicate a bibliography for further study of the subject, it should appear in a separate list under the title: Recommended Bibliography.

3.1.9 Annexes or Appendices

Complementary and/or supporting documents for the text, with clarifying information, tables or data placed separately, so as not to break the logical sequence of the presentation. When there is more than one, each attachment contains at the top of the page the indication ANNEX, in capital letters, followed by the corresponding number in Arabic numerals, and must be cited in the text in parentheses.

4. TCC formatting measures

The standard measures for formatting each TCC page are:

  • Top margin: 3,0 cm
  • Bottom margin: 2,0 cm
  • Right margin: 2,0 cm
  • Left margin: 3,0 cm
  • Quotes: single space (right justifying)
  • Between lines (space): double
  • Text source: Times or Arial – size 12
  • Quote Source: Times or Arial – size 10
  • paper format: A4

5. Fine considerations

It is hoped that with this proposal, we will be able to standardize the Library's TCCs and take advantage of the resources offered to improve publications. In addition to the physical standardization of the TCC, we also believe that we will be able to standardize the correct entry of authors and subjects, through the preparation of the cataloging card, a task also performed by the Library of the Faculty of Education/UNICAMP.
