Dissertation/Thesis Defense and Final Copy

Dear student, here you will find important information for requesting thesis and dissertation defenses.

Please read the information provided in each tab carefully. If you have any questions, please contact the postgraduate office.

DEFENSE REQUIREMENTS

To request the defense of a Master's or Doctorate, the student must have cumulatively met the following requirements:

  • Have accomplished the Qualification exam;
  • Have completed all the credits required for the course, according to the catalog in force in the year of entry;
  • Have passed a foreign language proficiency exam (01 language for the Master's degree and 02 for the Doctorate);
  • Have your dissertation/thesis ready for defense;
  • Not have any pending personal documents with the DAC;
  • Have indicated the option of an ethics statement in SIGA, approved by the supervisor. Access the filling guidelines.
  • Upload the opinion of the Research Ethics Committee, when necessary.

COMPOSITION OF THE EXAMINING BOARD

The Examining Boards shall be composed as follows:

MASTER'S DEGREE

The 3-member Examining Committee may be composed of:

  • by the Supervisor, one internal member and one external member; or
  •  by the Supervisor and two external members.

 Examining Committee with more than three members will be composed of:

  •  excluding the Supervisor, the number of external members must be at least equal to the number of internal members; or
  • by the Supervisor and other external members.

It will be necessary to indicate two substitute members, at least one of whom must be external.

DOCTORATE DEGREE

The Examining Committee with 5 members may be composed of:

  •  by the Supervisor, two internal members and two external members; or
  •  by the Supervisor, one internal member and three external members; or
  •  by the Supervisor and four external members.

 The Examining Committee with more than five members will be composed of:

  • excluding the Supervisor, the number of external members must be at least equal to the number of internal members; or
  • by the Supervisor and other external members.

It will be necessary to indicate three substitute members, at least one of whom must be external.

ATTENTION:

1) The mini-CV of all external members (full and alternate members) must be attached as a document in SIGA/DAC – To download the mini-CV template

2) The co-supervisor may not participate as a member of the Board.

3) Members with any type of link to Unicamp are considered internal members, for example: Voluntary Collaborating Professors or Researchers, Professors retired from Unicamp, Postdoctoral Researchers.

4) Only members who adhere to the principles of impartiality and ethics in their relationship with the student, their advisor and other members of the Committee may be members of the Examining Committees for master's dissertations or doctoral theses. See PRPG guidelines on the composition of the committees.

DEFENSE SCHEDULE

ATTENTION!!!

Before requesting a defense in SIGA, it is mandatory submission of the Thesis/Dissertation file for verification of textual similarity (in compliance with the regulations CCPG 03/2021):

CPG/FE Resolution No. 01/2021 – approved by the FE bodies. In force from 24/04/2024.

>> The submission of the full text in PDF format will be done through an electronic form to be made available on the FE Library portal (click here to access the form), 45 calendar days in advance of the date scheduled for the defense (deadline for scheduling the defense in SIGA).

>> The defense schedule must be finalized in SIGA/DAC at least 40 days in advance*. 

>> We recommend that you allow a safety margin regarding the request deadline, to avoid losses due to possible problems with the system.

DEFENSES BY VIDEOCONFERENCE

Scheduling FE videoconferencing rooms is the sole responsibility of the student and their advisor and must be done with, at least 30 working days before the defense date.

FINAL COPY

TERM

The copy must be inserted into SIGA – DAC Academic Management System,  up to 60 days after the Defense.

Important: diploma will be issued only after the final version has been approved by PRPG.

FORMATTING

The formatting of the final copy of the thesis/dissertation must follow the guidelines below:

CCPG REGULATORY INSTRUCTION No. 002/2021

Carefully check the formatting of the mandatory opening pages of the final copy, according to your course level:

Attention: Acknowledgements will be mandatory if the author has received financial support, in part or in full, from a funding agency(ies). In this case, the author must comply with the specific legislation in force for each of the Agencies regarding the need to reference the support received and the process number.

Compliant ORDINANCE No. 206, OF SEPTEMBER 4, 2018, works produced or published, in any media, resulting from activities financed, in whole or in part, by CAPES, must necessarily refer to the support received, and the following expression must be used in the language of the work:
“This work was carried out with the support of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel – Brazil (CAPES) – Financing Code 001”.
 

CATALOG CARD

The cataloging card must be inserted in the final copy.

(Note: The area of ​​concentration must be IDENTICAL to the academic record. Check your academic record before requesting the cataloging card from the library).

In the case of Dissertations and Theses financed by funding agencies, beneficiaries must make reference to the support received and include the name of the agency in the Cataloging Card creation system.

PRINTING THE FINAL COPY (optional)

If the student is interested in obtaining printed copies, he/she must follow the following procedures:

  • After approval of the dissertation or thesis, access the link below to view the graphic material options for theses/dissertations:

  • Click on “+ Details” to view the prices according to the model and the desired quantity:

  • Choose the model and quantity, view the value and make the payment via Pix using the details below:

  • ATTENTION! The student will not be able to complete the purchase, as the purchase will be made by the Faculty of Education!
  • After payment:
    – send an email to educacao@unicamp.br, with the subject “PRINTING THE FINAL COPY”
    – enter the order details (printout of the order details);
    – attach the attached proof of payment;
    – attach the PDF of the thesis/dissertation

When the copy is ready to be printed, the student will receive an email requesting collection from the Printing Office.

IMPORTANT! It is the student's responsibility to pay in advance and collect the copy from the printer.
