Dissertation/Thesis Defense and Final Copy

Dear student, here you will find important information for requesting thesis and dissertation defenses.

Requirements for defense

📝 To request the defense of a Master's or Doctorate, the student must have cumulatively met the following requirements:

  • Have accomplished the Qualification exam;
  • Have completed all the credits required for the course, according to the catalog in force in the year of entry;
  • Have passed a foreign language proficiency exam – 1 (one) language for the Master's degree and 2 (two) for the Doctorate;
  • Have your dissertation/thesis ready for defense;
  • Not have any pending personal documents with the DAC;
  • Have indicated an ethics statement option in SIGA, approved by the advisor. Access the filling guidelines.
  • Upload the opinion of the Research Ethics Committee, when necessary.

Composition of the Examining Board

It is recommended that you read the GUIDELINES FOR THE COMPOSITION OF EXAMINING COMMITTEES FOR THE DEFENSE OF DISSERTATIONS AND THESES, in accordance with Chapter V of the Resolution CONSU-A-10/2015.

Composition of the Master's examination boards:

👥 The 3-member Examining Committee may be composed of: 

👉 by the Supervisor, one internal member and one external member; or

👉 by the Supervisor and two external members.

👥 Examining Committee with more than three members will be composed of:

👉 excluding the Supervisor, the number of external members must be at least equal to the number of internal members; or

👉 by the Supervisor and other external members.

⚠️ Important: It will be necessary to indicate two substitute members, at least one of whom must be external.


Composition of the Doctoral Committees:

👥 The Examining Committee with 5 (five) full members may be composed of:

👉 by the Advisor, two internal members and two external members; or

👉 by the Advisor, one internal member and three external members; or

👉 by the Supervisor and four external members.

👥 The Examining Committee with more than 5 (five) full members will be composed of:

👉 excluding the Supervisor, the number of external members must be at least equal to the number of internal members; or

👉 by the Supervisor and other external members.

⚠️ Important: It will be necessary to appoint three substitute members, at least two of whom must be external.

Important information for Master's and Doctoral defenses

👉 If the external member (full and alternate) is not found in the SIGA/DAC search, the mini CV must be sent to educacao@unicamp.br: click here.

👉 The co-advisor may not participate as a member of the Examining Board.

👉 For the Master's Degree: members with any type of link with the School of Education Internal members are considered, for example: Voluntary Collaborating Professors or Researchers, Professors retired from Unicamp, Postdoctoral Researchers.

👉 For the Doctorate: members with any type of link with the UNICAMP are considered internal members, for example: Voluntary Collaborating Professors or Researchers, Professors retired from Unicamp, Postdoctoral Researchers.

👉 Only members who adhere to the principles of impartiality and ethics in their relationship with the student, their advisor and other members of the Committee may be part of the Master's Dissertation or Doctoral Thesis Examining Committees, as per INFORMATION CCPG/003/2015.

Defense Scheduling

1 step: Textual similarity check

📅 Term: up to 45 calendar days before the defense date

Before requesting a defense in SIGA, it is mandatory send the complete file of the Thesis or Dissertation for verification of textual similarity, according to the CCPG Normative Instruction No. 3/2021.
This requirement is provided for in the CPG/FE Resolution No. 01/2021, in force since 24/04/2024.

2 step: Scheduling the defense in SIGA

📅 Term: up to 40 calendar days before the defense date

Scheduling must be done on SIGA (Academic Management System), through the DAC website:

This step follows the CPG Normative Instruction No. 01/2023, based on Art. 40, §7º and §8º of the General Regulations for Postgraduate Studies, which deals with defenses and qualification exams.

⚠️ We recommend scheduling in advance to avoid any problems if the system becomes unstable.

⚠️ The SIGA system exclusively accepts files in PDF-A format.

Step 3: Request support for video conferencing (exclusive for participation of members of the Examining Committee)

📅 Term: up to 30 calendar days before the defense date

If members of the Examining Committee participate via videoconference, technical support in the FE rooms must be requested in advance.

🔸 This scheduling is the responsibility of the student and the advisor.
🔸 It must be done with at least 30 consecutive days before the defense.
🔸 Also follow the guidelines of CPG Normative Instruction No. 01/2023.

Final Copy

📅 Deadline:

The copy must be inserted into SIGA – DAC Academic Management System,  up to 60 days after the Defense.

⚠️ Important: high school diploma will be issued only after the final version has been approved by PRPG.

📝 Formatting:

The formatting of the final copy of the thesis/dissertation must follow the guidelines below:

CCPG REGULATORY INSTRUCTION No. 002/2021

Carefully check the formatting of the mandatory opening pages of the final copy, according to your course level:

⚠️ Please note: Acknowledgments are mandatory if the author has received financial support, whether partial or full, from a funding agency. In this case, the author must comply with the specific legislation in force for each funding agency regarding the need to cite the support received and the process number.

Compliant ORDINANCE No. 206, OF SEPTEMBER 4, 2018, works produced or published, in any media, resulting from activities financed, in whole or in part, by CAPES, must necessarily refer to the support received, and the following expression must be used in the language of the work:
“This work was carried out with the support of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel – Brazil (CAPES) – Financing Code 001”.

📄 Catalog Card:

The cataloging record must be included in the final version of the dissertation or thesis.

⚠️ Important: The major specified in the application must be exactly the same as the one listed on your academic transcript. Please verify this information before submitting your application.

📈 If the work has received support from a funding agency, the beneficiaries must reference the support received and enter the name of the agency in the Cataloging Form creation system, and in the “Process number” field, register “Not applicable”.

REDU – Unicamp Research Data Repository

👉 Access at https://redu.unicamp.br/: Unicamp's official platform used to store, preserve, share, reuse and ensure the reproducibility of research data produced at the University.

👉 If the data is not in REDU, it is mandatory to fill in the metadata indicating where this data is stored.

The inclusion of the DOI will be mandatory in SIGA in the following situations:

📝 Doctoral Theses: mandatory for approvals from March 1, 2025.

📝 Master's Dissertations: mandatory for approvals from August 1, 2025.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Master's and Doctorate defenses will only be approved if the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is correctly registered in the system.

👉 The SIGA system exclusively accepts files in PDF-A format.

Printing the Final Copy (optional)

📕 If the student is interested in obtaining printed copies, they must follow the following procedures:

⚠️ ATTENTION! The student will not be able to complete the purchase, as the purchase will be made by the Faculty of Education!

👉 After payment:

  • send an email to educacao@unicamp.br, with the subject “PRINTING THE FINAL COPY”;
    enter the order details (printout of the order details);
  • attach the attached proof of payment;
  • attach the PDF of the thesis/dissertation

👉 When the copy is ready to be printed, the student will receive an email requesting collection from the printer.

⚠️ IMPORTANT! It is the student's responsibility to pay in advance and collect the copy from the printer.
