Professor emérito de música na York University (Toronto). Foi professor na University of Saskatchewan, Columbia University (onde foi o editor fundador da publicação Current Musicology) e Yale University. Editor geral de músicas e textos de Stefan Wolpe.

Projetou e ministrou cursos sobre teoria e prática do processo criativo desde 1984. Seu trabalho de ensino e pesquisa na área da criatividade resultou na formação do "The Milkweed Collective", uma comunidade de artistas, poetas, músicos e professores que realizam apresentações públicas de arte e oficinas de trabalho sobre criatividade para crianças e adultos. Um livro escrito em colaboração com os membros do "Collective", The intelligence of the imagination: personal stories of the Creative Process está sendo publicado.

Resumo: "Rumo a um currículo que privilegie a imaginação criativa"

O trabalho descreve o currículo de um curso universitário destinado a engajar a estrutura profunda do processo criativo. Apresentado primeiramente em 1984, o curso vem sendo dado a artistas plásticos. O currículo é apresentado em doze conceitos e sob os tópicos Ativando a imaginação e a atitude simbólica, Imagens arquetípicas, Personalidade e criatividade, O ciclo do processo criativo e do processo ritual. As respostas dos estudantes indicam que a proposta preencheu a forte necessidade de um curso que permitisse engajar as inteligências pré-cognitivas da imaginação, comunidade e espiritualidade. O trabalho traz também relatórios de professores que aplicaram os conceitos do curso em suas classes. O grupo de alunos de 1995 permaneceu unido, formando uma comunidade que ainda se reúne regularmente, apresenta shows com trabalhos de arte e desenvolve oficinas sobre criatividade para estudantes crianças e adultos.
